Joan graduated from Brigham Young University where she studied art and taught classes at the campus craft store. She was introduced to calligraphy in high school and began a more serious study in the early 80's. She has taught calligraphy classes for about 20 years at various venues including community colleges, art galleries, and for calligraphy guilds from California to Alabama. She has been chosen to be on the faculty of five international lettering conferences, teaching students from as far away as Japan.
She has been on the Board of Directors of the international Association for the Calligraphic Arts for several years including four as president. She is also a member of Best of Missouri Hands (artisans group), Missouri Fiber Artists, and the St. Louis Calligraphy Guild. Joan has exhibited regionally and been represented by galleries in two states. Her calligraphic art has been published in Letter Arts Review, Somerset Studio and Somerset Gallery, Arnold Grummer's Complete Guide to Papercasting, Handlettering for Crafts, and The Calligrapher's Engagement Calendar.
Joan has lived in Jefferson City Missouri for over 15 years, a record in one place for her family. With the youngest of five children out of the house, she is hoping to use the skills she has been polishing to become a full-time artist rather than having a "self-supporting hobby". She loves teaching, does wedding work as well as hand-printed cards & prints, original broadsides and commissions, etc. but especially likes working on large canvases. Her top request for teaching is a method for calligraphic papercasting she developed and refined over the past fifteen years. She dabbles in book arts and other related subjects and has studied with many of the top lettering artists in the country.
